Woodworthia chrysosireticus (Robb, 1980)
Taranaki Goldstripe Gecko

Description:

The term Goldstripe is derived from the two yellowish strips that run the length of the body to the start of the tail. The other stripes may be of any shade from olive green, fawn or brown. These geckos are very secretive and agile. Length < 70 mm SV. The toes are equipped with wide pads that enable this species to climb on virtually any surface.

Distribution:

Limited to the West coast of the North Island, mainly in a wide coastal strip around the Taranaki province. Occasionally found inland. Colonies have also been found on Mana Island close to Wellington.

Ecology

Nocturnal habit but can often be found sun basking on bright sunny days. Feeds on a diversified range of insects, spiders and like most lizards is very opportunistic in its prey selection.

Habitat:

Generally found in well established flax (Phormium tenax) clumps but also frequents old, undisturbed piles of timber and dilapidated buildings.
