Description: The "mossy" appearance of this gecko is due to the complex patterns of white and yellow shades on the green colouration of the body, The mouth lining is blue, and the tongue is an orange-pink. The toes, which are yellow or yellowish-green, are narrow and tapering. There is usually a small spot of bright yellow at the corners of the mouth. The S.V. length can reach up to 85mm. Distribution: Found in the Lewis Pass region, at Rahu, Reefton and northern Westland. Ecology Diurnal and arboreal. In captivity specimens have been observed as having crepuscular behaviour thus avoiding the hottest part of the day. Young are born between March and May. The juveniles have more conspicuous markings than the adults. Habitat: Scrubland and forested areas, occupying the canopy area of manuka/kanuka in particular. Notes: The specific name means "covered in tubercles' referring to the enlarged scales on the head and body. |
