An Evening with the Frogs

The evening includes an educational talk by a Hamilton Zoo keeper, followed by a visit to the nocturnal frog house to meet the cryptic nocturnal native Hochstetter’s frogs. This is a rare chance to see these unique animals up close and personal.

Conservation Week at Hamilton Zoo

In celebration of Conservation Week, the Hamilton Zoo conservation crew are hosting a combined Face2Face encounter and native planting experience, on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September 2011, session times 11.30am & 2.30pm. Get up close and personal with our green tree gecko, enjoy the magic of the largest walk-through aviary in Australasia, do the Weka Walk and leave your mark by planting a New Zealand native on zoo grounds!

Book your session on-site at the zoo (no pre-bookings available) but be in quick, as there are just ten spaces available per session for this rare experience. The cost is $10 per person with a contribution going to the Hamilton Zoo Conservation Fund. Normal zoo entry fee applies.

An evening with the frogs

New Zealand once had seven native frog species but three became extinct after human habitation. The four remaining are Hochstetter’s frogs, Archey’s frogs, Maud Island frogs and Hamilton’s frogs. These four species are amongst the most primitive living anurans (frogs and toads) on earth - they have been around for 70 million years! The evening includes an educational talk by Hamilton Zoo keeper, Kara Goddard, followed by a visit to the nocturnal frog house to meet the cryptic nocturnal native Hochstetter’s frogs. This is a rare chance to see these unique animals up close and personal.

Added bonus: Visitors to this event will also be enlightened by local bat expert Darren Le Roux who will demonstrate how bat detectors work in the zoo surrounds!
