Robust and McGregor's skinks

Robust and McGregor's skinks
Reptiles this care guide covers

Robust skinks (Oligosoma alani) and McGregor's skinks (Oligosoma macgregori) are two of New Zealand's largest and rarest skinks. Both species were formerly widespread, but are highly susceptible to predation by introduced mammals and now entirely restricted to a handful of pest-free islands.

In captivity the main aspect of their care is ensuring that they have ample access to areas of humidity and thermally stable release sites, as both species are vulnerable to evaporative water loss and heat stress.

These species can only be held on higher-level permits.
