Small diurnal skinks

Small diurnal skinks

Several species of small diurnal skinks in the genus Oligosoma are present in captive facilities and able to be held in captivity under DOC authorisations.

Of these, the most commonly held species are shore skinks (Oligosoma smithi), moko skinks (Oligosoma moco) and small-scaled skinks (Oligosoma microlepis). The main challenge with holding these species is their fast / agile nature so emphasis needs to be placed on creating an enclosure which is escape proof, and includes a lip under the door to prevent these lizards rushing out when opened.

These skinks can be held on second-level permits (Insurance population species).
